CHALCEDONY
The stone you chose is Chalcedony. It derives from the Greek Χαλκηδόνιος Chalkedonios or Καλχεδόνιος, Latinized as Chalcedonius; it is a terminology that refers to Chalcedon, an ancient city of Bithynia on the Bosphorus. It means, "inhabitant of Chalcedon", a Greek term almost coinciding with Χαρκηδόνιος (Charkedonios), which denoted an inhabitant of Carthage which derives from the Phoenician Qart Hadast 'new city' . Blue chalcedony represented the elements water and air among the ancients: it was in fact considered the stone of orators and a magical symbol of atmospheric conditions. In Renaissance magic, the figure of a man with his right hand raised was engraved on this stone and the amulet was worn for success in legal cases, as well as for health and safety. In the 16th century it was suggested by magicians as an antidote to false ideas and daydreams and, for this purpose, it was pierced and worn around the neck.
